i would have to disagree with that both crash and tomb raider will draw an audience its just that tomb raider will get it in the theater while crash will gain more in Rental and Video/DVD gross
Tomb Raider Theater Gross: $122,512,612 (http://imdb.com/boxoffice/?region=us&date=2001-07-13) Crash Theater Gross:$40,932,504 (http://imdb.com/boxoffice/?region=us&date=2005-06-03)
Tomb Raider Rental Gross: $62.8M (http://imdb.com/boxoffice/rentals?date=2002-02-17) Crash Rental Gross: $47.6M (http://imdb.com/boxoffice/rentals?date=2005-12-18)
looking at these numbers, tomb raider did worse in rentals than the theater but crash actually did better

but Tomb Raider did better in the theater and in rentals. I think you're missing the point of what I was saying. I'm talking about a movie bringing people to the theater versus people becoming attached to the movie. Millions of people saw Tomb Raider, but once it was over they didn't give a shit about the movie. Compared to people seeing Crash and once the movie's over it means something to them and they discuss it with other people. The fact that Crash did better in rentals actually proves my point further, because it didn't bring as big an audience into the theater, but because of word of mouth and the meaning of the movie it did better in the DVD market. It's like Requiem for a Dream, Donnie Darko, etc. They made jack shit in the theater, but they're Cult Classics in the DVD market. Maybe It'd make more since if I said which genre has the biggest impact on the viewer.

If we are talking about drawing on people's emotions then I think it's horror like Grizz said. But if it is just drawing people to the theater then it's whatever movie advertises more.
Any movie can become popular if it is advertised everywhere (TV, radio, previews, fast food restaurants, etc) like Tomb Raider was. Problem is that most of these movies suck because they have to try to appeal to everyone instead of making a really good movie that may be disliked by some.

the funny thing is they usually try to appeal to everyone and everyone usually ends up hating it

Have any good ideas? Every time I ask someone, they don't know.
