Wasn't there are strike or a lockout in the NFL in the late 80's? I don't really know. That could have been the reason why the NBA crept up on the NFL. yup - good call, 1987. and you're probably on target about that.

NO!!
College Football is the same sport and the only thing that could possibly be more popular than the NFL in the upcoming future.
I've always enjoyed watching all kinds of sporting events. This wasn't much of a problem growing up because you have the time and freedom. As you get older and get married and have a family etc..etc... You have less time and freedom. So you have to make choices on what sporting events your going to watch. I chose the NFL which I've been watching every sunday since I was 6 years old. Our religion is watching the games on Dircect TV every sunday. I watch some college football on saturday. I have the season package for the NBA and didn't watch an entire game all season, the main reason is that the Blazers suck ass these days and can't stand too watch them. Baseball I watch an entire game maybe once a month. NHL a sharks game now and then.

College football isn't as exciting to me. There's always the powerhouses dominating and there's always the stars doing everything. You can basically predict who will win before the game is even played. Last season, you could say, oh USC will win every game and basically be right. Previous seasons, you could say, Miami will win every game and basically be right. College football is too toploaded. Absolutely no balance. Even in championship bowl games. You could say, that team has more talent and was better in a tougher conference, they're winning. It's boring to know who will win before it even happens.
In the NFL, it's a bit more balanced except some teams obviously have more talent/experience. It's any given Sunday, win or lose. There hasn't been an undefeated team since those Dolphins.

There is a good amount more parity, definitely.
I much prefer college basketball to college football. May have something to do with that there's no college football team to root for here besides Penn State, but they're about 4 hours away.

I would have to say that I don't think any sport will eclipse NFL football in terms of being America #1 sport.
1. The NFL's grasp on the media market is unrivaled. CBS, ESPN, NFL Network, FOX, SIRIUS just to name a few.
2. They have their own minor league system in College Football
Just teo of the reasons NFL will continue to dominate the US media.

No way the NFL gets passed up by any other sport. It's too engrained in the society and the once a week games make it almost religious.
College football doesn't stand a chance to gain popularity until they get a playoff system. Even if a team isn't one of the elite but they play their asses off all year and go undefeated they still probably won't have a shot at the championship, which makes all but 2 or 3 games a week completely meaningless.

Ever's too long to say, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. Like has been mentioned, too much tradition and the way the NFL is setup every NFL game feels like a big event and is crucial to the standings which makes it must see TV.
