53. How do retired players count against the cap? Any money paid to a player is included in team salary, even if the player has retired. For example, James Worthy retired in 1994, two years before his contract ended. He continued to receive his salary for the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons, so his salary was included in the Lakers' team salary in those seasons. It is at the team's discretion (or as the result of an agreement between the team and player) whether to continue to pay the player after he has retired. There is one exception whereby a player can continue to receive his salary, but the salary is not included in the team's team salary. This is when a player is forced to retire for medical reasons and a league-appointed physician confirms that he is medically unfit to continue playing. There is a waiting period of one year following the injury or illness before a team can apply for this salary cap relief. If the waiting period expires mid-season (on any date prior to the last day of the regular season), then the player's entire salary for that season is removed from the team's team salary. For example, in March 2003 the Knicks were allowed to remove Luc Longley's entire 2002-03 salary from their books (and since the luxury tax is based on the team salary as of the last day of the regular season, the Knicks avoided paying any tax on Longley's salary). This provision can also be used when a player dies while under contract. Teams are not allowed to trade for disabled players and then apply for this salary cap relief. Only the team for which the player was playing when he was disabled may request this relief. If a player retires, even for medical reasons, his team does not receive a salary cap exception to acquire a replacement player. from members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#53

well... look at your team , it was a joke, i know(at least i think) that you weren't the guy that ran the team into the ground No, it wasn't me that ran the team into the ground. I'm the one that inherited this mess. Either way, considering your team is 7-21, you probably shouldn't make that joke.

As a Heat fan, I love to see this move happen. Although Shaq did bring the championship, it's been obvious he is far from who he used to be. But he can still be a very good contributer on the right team.
It's going to interesting to see what the Heat do for the 2nd half and the off-season. I feel like the only way the Heat have a shot of winning is playing small ball like the Suns. It's almost as if the team's will switch philosophies. Wade will be SG, Jason Williams/Cook will be PG, Wright will be SF, Marion will be PF, and Haslem will play center.
Then again, Haslem may get traded in favor of Marion playing PF, putting Earl Barron or Mark Blount who have been productive this year at center. The Heat will be in position to pick Beasley, Hibbert, Thabeet, or DeAndre Jordan anyway in June.
Wade is the obvious centerpiece. Have Cook and Wright done enough to tell Riles not to draft Rose or Mayo?
Ideally, Wade, Cook, and Wright would stay around. I'm kinda hoping Marion stays but if he walks, it wouldn't bother me all that much. I'm hoping we get a big man in the draft. No need for Rose or Mayo. Wade and Beasley would be instantly explosive while Wade and Hibbert would be a centerpiece for a championship. Plus that 2nd round pick could net a good player.
The bench is fairly solid. It would be nice to move some salary around but probably won't happen.
I think the Heat can really turn it around fast with this move. Without it, the Heat would be stuck in overpaid mediocrity/complete suckiness.

I don't like Hibbert at all. He is soft, and isn't a top two option IMO. I do love what Micheal Beasly can be in the NBA, espicially with a D Wade type player.

If Brook Lopez leaves he will be the top center taken in the draft. Beasley, Rose, or Mayo would all be great on Miami IMO.
Hibbert is a great college center, but he'll never amount to much more than an Erick Dampier type in the NBA.

Terrible move for the Suns.
A overaged, plodding center is not what you need for a run and gun offense. No offense, Shaq's a great player, but he is indeed past his prime, there's no question, what a great move by the Heat.

If I have a favourite team it's the Mavs but I think Kerr knows what he is doing here. Marion is overated and the games I watched, especially in the playoffs, the suns don't run and gun 100% of the time because they aren't allowed to. Their half court options just got better. To be honest, I'm more scared of the Suns now. Amare finally playing PF is scary and Shaq has brought success wherever he goes. Even if he's not the main man.

I'm fine with it if Shaq shows he is actually still capable of playing at a reasonable level. Problem is he hasn't shown that in a season and a half. We should've at least gotten every Heat draft pick from now til 2020 in the deal.
