Although sources say the teams are still sorting out final details, this deal was described as "imminent" by multiple sources close to the process after negotiations moved to an advanced stage Tuesday night. The deal -- salvaged from talks on a three-way trade with Portland that developed and fizzled quickly two weeks ago -- has Dallas sending 24-year-old point guard Devin Harris, veteran swingman Jerry Stackhouse, the expiring contracts of center DeSagana Diop and swingman Devean George and guard Maurice Ager to New Jersey for Kidd and forward Malik Allen. Sources say Dallas will also send the Nets the league-maximum $3 million, the Mavs' first-round draft pick this June and a first-rounder in 2010. sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3244102

Compare the three big deals (Gasol, Kidd, Shaq)
Lakers get the best player and give up the least for him. Thats why they are the model franchise and the others are panicking fools.

Dallas just made the dumbest trade of the season! So Shaq in Phoenix doesn't make sense, but if Phoenix does change there offense a bit, it can work. Gasol to the Lakers, that was the perfect trade. But the Mav's giving up on Devin Harris for Kidd, is so stupid. Devin Harris has the chance to be a stud, and I think he will make Dallas eat crow once he gets settled in with Jefferson and whoever they trade Carter fior. Dallas is now in a win now scenerio, and I don't think they have the pieces to do so. This deal makes no sense to me at all. It's like the Grizzlies trading Rudy Gay for Vince Carter. Why would you do that for a player who doesn't put you in any better position to win the title. Now Kidds lack of a jumper is going to be even more exposed in Dallas slow down offense. Stupid, stupid, stupid deal Dallas. This is way worse then the Shaq trade IMO.

I think when you spend money like Dallas does there is never a bad trade because you can just buy the fix, but Dallas had to make a move starting Terry and Harris hasn't won them shit and they way Avery like to play I think Kidd is a prefect fit....Lets not forget Harris has been hurt and really hasn't become what the other young PGs in the league has become like Paul,Felton and Williams for the most part. He can't even beat Jason Terry out for the starting PG.......As for stackhouse Terry fills that role that he played and Diop wasn't going to be re-signed by them so thats a wash also the picks shouldn't be anything good unless Dirk dies.....Still think the Suns deal for Shaq is going to blow up in their face.....Steve Kerr next M.J or Zeek of the GM's

Bringing a sure thing when it comes to leadership and wins can never be a bad deal.
Sure that Harris can become really good although he isn't the play-making kind of PG I like and that Kidd is on his last couple of seasons in the league but a trade for Jason "I can make any team work even team USA" Kidd is hardly a bad trade. Of course, I'm a big Jason Kidd fan so I can see others not agreeing but there's a reason I like Jason Kidd and that's because he brings much more than stats to his teams. Dallas will miss Stackhouse and Diop but if they were thought to be a top team in the West, they sure are more favourites after this one at least for the next couple of years.

Maybe Stackhouse won't be missed at all:
"Now I think it's pretty much a done deal," Stackhouse told The Associated Press.
The Nets are expected to buy out Stackhouse's contract immediately, which could enable him to re-sign with Dallas if he waits 30 days.
"I feel great. I get 30 days to rest, then I'll be right back," Stackhouse said. "I ain't going nowhere."
Without Diop maybe Mavs have another deal in the works for another big because only Dampier in the middle is scarce. Still Dallas getting Kidd makes the west even more exciting.

I personally like all 3 big trades here.
I don't know how anyone can't like Kidd coming to Dallas. Harris may wind up a stud but they're in position to win now and after LA and Phoenix made their trades Dallas had to make a move (although Kidd to Dallas has been speculated for some time now) why not go get one of the top 3 all around PG's in the league?

I agree Shaq to Phoenix will pay off. Yes they are a run and gun team but I'm pretty sure 5 big men score over 30 a game against them. This frees up Amare to get open looks, and touches. Also you need somebody to ignite the break. He could wind up being a terrible move, but they weren't winning a championship the way they were. As for the other trades. obviously Gasol to Lakers was the ideal move, but Kidd to Dallas can't be that bad. He still is a top PG in the league, how can it hurt?

Everyone seems to forget that Kidd has never played on a slow paced half court team. And your not going to convince me that Diop and Damp are going to be bale to get up the court. He doesn't have his high flyers, and he doesn't have the speed to get to the rim anymore. So now your going to rely on him to hit jumpers? Kidd has never been able to shoot, and he now is going to a shooting team? If I was Dallas, I would had made that same offer for Vince not Kidd

That's all true but you don't have to know much to know that when you think about winning championships the name Jason Kidd comes to mind and the last name I think of is Vince Carter. Talent aside of course. As for the basketball issues, I'd let those be figured by who surely understands them more than we do and that's Jason Kidd. If I have no doubt Steve Nash will find a way to get Shaq involved, I also have no doubt that Jason Kidd will find a way to make things work. That's what they've been doing all their careers. With teams learning to limit Dallas by doubling and tripling Dirk, a floor general PG seems exactly what the Mavs needed in order to have someone that can get the ball to the open man and find Dirk some space. Kidd can't shoot but Dirk sure can when fed right.

Not to mention, you can't argue how much this will help Dirk, Howard, Terry, etc. I read somewhere Dallas is in the bottom third of the league when it comes to assists but yet rank high in FG%. Kidd's 10+ assists per game is going to find those open shots, in fact create more.

They have always run a slow paced isolation heavy offense. No point guard is going to rack up a lot of assists in that system.
