Grossman staying cool as heat rises
By K.C. Johnson Tribune staff reporter Published August 22, 2006
If the Bears' first-team offense fails to click Friday night against Arizona, Rex Grossman knows how he'd feel.
"I'd be shocked," he said.
Despite his poor statistics, Grossman's swagger has been unaffected.
"I'm going out there with a lot of confidence, even though I've had a couple of bad quarters or some plays I wished I had back," he said. "I need to play the way I know I can. Once I do, hopefully everything will relax a bit."
Coach Lovie Smith has done his part to help Grossman relax, reiterating he's the starter no matter what Brian Griese does.
"When he's gotten a chance to play, he's played real well," Grossman said of Griese. "It's a situation where I know it's out there. I'm just not paying attention to it. I'm trying to do my job. I know what I'm capable of doing. If you worry about that other stuff, it becomes a distraction."
Starters are expected to play three quarters Friday, which means the most important exhibition will include a chance to make adjustments at halftime.
Grossman hopes to have made one adjustment--namely, visiting the end zone--long before then.
"I feel like we haven't been able to get things going," he said. "A large part has to do with me. I need to do my job."

this guy must be delusional. he's the 2nd best QB in chicago, and that's not saying much when the best QB is brian griese. i'm just surprised lovie smith sticks with him.

It's way to early to make that assumption. Grossman has started a total of 7 games in his 3 years of NFL experience. That's less than 1/2 a season combined. If he can ever stay healthy for an extended period of time, Lovie will have adequate time to evaluate him. In the end, you may be right about Griese being the better QB, but that remains to be seen.

And 2003. And 2004. still, while it's not too early to make that assumption, grossman hasn't had enough of a sample size yet even though he's been given the starting job three times and has gotten injured each time. still, while grossman has been healthy all preseason and has been putrid this preseason, it will be interesting if grossman can change the tide.

Even if Grossman does "well", I'd be surprised to see him crack the top half QBs in terms of fantasy points. Chicago is, and always will be, a run-first football team. Grossman's best play will be to hand the ball off to a healthy Benson or Jones, especially when the weather in Chicago turns colder. That being said, his weapons in the passing game are improving, but I wouldn't expect much from him or Griese from a fantasy perspective.

I also have to disagree with the fact that Grossman is one of the worst starting QB's in the NFL. In the NFC Championship game Rex did his job. He put points on the board and delivered the ball well. The defense lost that game for them. I believe that Rex Grossman can be a good NFL quarterback. Of course I may be biased as a diehard Bears fan.
