Bone chip will keep Pavano out indefinitely May 19, 2006 CBS SportsLine.com wire reports NEW YORK -- Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano will need surgery for a bone chip above his right elbow, and there is no timetable for his return.
Yankees manager Joe Torre said the extent of Pavano's injury will not be known until the operation.
Pavano has been on the disabled list since the start of the season after bruising his buttocks in spring training. He left a rehab start for Double-A Trenton after only nine pitches Wednesday because of arm soreness.
Pavano is in the second year of a four-year, $39.9 million contract. He went 4-6 last season, cut short because of rotator cuff tendinitis.
Torre made the announcement at Shea Stadium before the start of New York's Subway Series against the Mets.
