CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
NEW YORK -- The New York Mets made another trade to help their injury-depleted pitching staff Thursday, acquiring Dave Williams from the Cincinnati Reds for a minor leaguer.
The Reds got right-hander Robert Manuel in the deal and assigned him to Class-A Dayton. They also sent about $500,000 to the Mets to cover half of Williams' remaining salary this season. Williams is making $1.4 million this year.
The 27-year-old lefty was designated for assignment by Cincinnati on Saturday. He was 2-3 with a 7.20 ERA in eight starts.
"We've added to our stockpile of pitching," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said. "It enables us to fill some holes caused by the injuries to some of the players we had. It gives us numbers."
In his last start, Williams gave up six runs in three innings of Cincinnati's 9-8 victory over Pittsburgh on Thursday. He went 10-11 with a 4.25 ERA for the Pirates last season and is 19-29 with a 4.56 ERA in 74 major league games, including 66 starts. Full story
Kinsler comes off disabled list for Rangers
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas rookie second baseman Ian Kinsler, who was hitting .476 when he dislocated his left thumb the second week of the season, was activated from the disabled list and back in the Rangers starting lineup.
Outfielder Adrian Brown was designated for assignment.
Mark DeRosa, the primary second baseman while Kinsler was out, started Thursday night in right field against Oakland.
Kinsler got hurt when he slid into second base on an attempted steal April 11. The converted shortstop made his major league debut playing in eight of the Rangers' first nine games, and was 10-for-21 with a homer and two RBI.
Blue Jays sign Alfonzo to minor-league deal
TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays signed infielder Edgardo Alfonzo to a minor league contract.
The 32-year-old was released by the Los Angeles Angels earlier this month after batting .100 in 18 games.
Alfonzo hit .277 last season for the San Francisco Giants, with two home runs and 43 RBI in 109 games. He has a career batting average of .285 with 281 doubles, 146 home runs and 740 RBIs.
The former all-star will report to Double-A New Hampshire on Friday.
Nunez, minor-leaguer for Giants, suspended 50 games
NEW YORK -- Former major league outfielder Abraham Nunez, playing in the minors this season for the San Francisco Giants, was suspended 50 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
The 29-year-old Nunez played in 136 games for Florida and Kansas City, batting .209 with six home runs and 35 RBI. He last played in the majors in 2004.
Nunez hit .223 with six homers and 29 RBI for Triple-A Fresno this year.
