Tigers lefty Maroth to have elbow surgery June 1, 2006 CBS SportsLine.com wire reports DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers left-hander Mike Maroth is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery Friday to remove bone chips from his left elbow.
The 28-year-old Maroth has been dealing with elbow problems since April but hadn't missed a regular-season start until Tuesday, when Roman Colon took his place.
Maroth is 5-2 with a 3.56 ERA and 22 strikeouts in nine starts this season, his fourth with the Tigers.
He felt recurring irritation in the elbow during his last start on May 25 at Kansas City. The problem prevented Maroth from fully extending his arm, and he had one of the worst outings of his career, allowing six runs and six hits in the first inning, including three consecutive homers. The Tigers rallied for a 13-8 victory.
The Tigers did not immediately announce how long Maroth is expected to be sidelined. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 26, when the Tigers recalled reliever Chris Spurling from Triple-A Toledo.
