Houston sends Gallo to minors; Bagwell put on 60-day DL June 2, 2006 CBS SportsLine.com wire reports HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros optioned struggling left-hander Mike Gallo to Triple-A Round Rock on Friday and called up right-hander Chris Sampson.
The Astros also moved Jeff Bagwell to the 60-day disabled list. Bagwell, who turned 38 on May 27, is not expected to play this season because of an arthritic right shoulder.
Gallo (1-2) has allowed 11 earned runs and 28 hits with a 6.06 ERA in 16 1/3 innings. He had a disastrous week before his demotion, giving up the winning hits in extra-inning losses at Pittsburgh on May 27 and St. Louis on Wednesday.
Sampson, 28, is 7-1 with a 2.64 ERA in 10 starts for Round Rock this season. In 61 1/3 innings, he has allowed 53 hits with 35 strikeouts and just five walks.
"Chris has been pitching well, and we've struggled here a little bit," Houston manager Phil Garner said. "Our bullpen has been stressed a little bit. We need a guy who might give us a lot of innings and some quality innings, and we're going to throw Chris right out there."
