Davis verbally agrees to go to Clippers, leave Warriors ESPN.com news services Baron Davis shocked the Warriors by opting out of his contract on Monday. Imagine their surprise now. NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein that the guard reached a verbal agreement with the Clippers on Tuesday night and will sign a new multiyear contract with Los Angeles after the leaguewide moratorium on signings and trades is lifted July 9. Davis was in line to make $17.8 million in the last year of his deal with the Warriors, but after telling the team that he wanted to stay, opted out at the last minute. Sources told ESPN.com that Davis, 29, will receive a five-year deal worth an estimated $65 million. Forward Elton Brand also opted out of his contract with the Clippers on Monday, and speculation quickly began that the team would try to keep Brand and sign Davis. This scenario is only possible if the Clippers renounce the rights of Corey Maggette and Brand takes a slight pay cut. Sources say the Clippers are expected to do just that and quickly reach a verbal agreement to bring back Brand. Maggette opted out of his deal on Monday as well. Davis averaged 21.8 points, 7.6 assists and 4.7 rebounds last season for a Warriors team that won 48 games but did not make the playoffs. sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3470016

not much bench...but a solid, veteran laden, top 8...
B.Davis/B.Knight C.Mobley/E.Gordon A.Thornton E.Brand/T.Thomas C.Kaman
and i know brand hasn't officially agreed to a deal yet, but I heard on Memphis radio today from our radio play-by-play guy who is from Cali, who said from the Clipper employees he talked to today, it is 99.5% that he is staying....and with him and bdiddy both being movie producers, they are likely great friends...

Poor Warrior fans. They thought BD was their man.

The Warriors have a bunch of cap room now. Somebody is going to get ridiculously overpaid.

This is great for the Clippers and Warriors. Clipps are a team where there star is almost out of his prime, so they need to make a move now in order to win. The Warriors are a team that is close to being s playoff team, but is just getting older. They have a very young superstar, and they now get a chance to rebuild around that player. Now it's all about how they spend the money. If your looking at just a great fit, and not at the log jam on this current roster, I think Josh Smith fits in nicely if you can move Al Harrington

I think you have to sign BD back. He was the face of the franchise, and the Warriors only became relevant when he came to Golden State. But that's just another of a long line of bad decisions by the Warriors organization. The heart and soul of your team is now gone. He's only 29 years old, and nothing in free agency is guaranteed. Look at what the Wizards did. They're Arenas top dollar to stay, because he's the only player that makes them relevant, and you're not going to find a better player in free agency than him. Bad move by the Warriors. And for the Clipps, they finally get a player that worth the price of admission. Those days of Jessica Alba and Adam Sandler showing up to Warrior games are long gone.

If your winning people will show up regardless to where you are. Fans are more excited about what Ellis can be, then what Baron has left. Also Baron is making 65 mil over 5 seasons, he isn't worth that. Thats the problem with giving guys big contracts at 29 -30 yrs old, because after year 3 you regret paying him so much because of the drastic decrease in there ability. ie Eddie Jones, Micheal Finlay, Keith Vanhorn, Shaq, Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Allan Houston, Jamal Mashburn, Nick Van Axle, Antoine Walker, Brad Miller, Damon Stodamire, Juwan Howard, Stephon Marbuary, Steve Francis Golden State has the chance to rebuild around a player who is just as exciting as Baron, but way younger and in much better shape. Don't you find it funny that Barons most healthy & productive year, is the year that he opts out of his deal? The Warriors played this game once with Adonole Foyal and they aren't going to do it again. Even with B-Diddy, the Warriors aren't a playoff team. They aren't better then any of the previous 8 to make it, and the Blazers get Oden and and a steal of a pick in Bayless. The Nuggets are probably the only team that Warrior team would have a chance to unseed from last years playoffs, and that is a stretch IMP. So this deal allows them to build around a just as capable player who is younger and whose growth was being stunted by Baron, as Kobe's was by Eddie Jones back in the day. (Not saying Monta is clsoe to Kobe, just saying he now gets the chance to run his team) This is a great deal for both, as long as the Warriors spend their money on the right young pieces.

LOL, Warriors just offered Brand a huge deal. How funny would that be if he signed with the Warriors

I really have have a hard time seeing Ellis and the Warriors group of 7 foot tall toothpicks developing into anything more than a novelty show. The Hawks are not going to let Josh Smith go even if the Warriors offer him the max. Arenas is crazy enough to do anything but its hard to imagine him passing on 120 million from the Wizards. Who else is out there that fits Nellieball?

Who else is out there that fits Nellieball? Josh Smith and Mike Woodson ended the season on bad terms, thats why teams spoke of Smith ending up in Philly, because Smith might just rather play there. As for Ellis......... In noway is that team going to win now, but as I said before he is young, and they have nothing but time to build around him. You can build through the draft as well as FA. Stepan Jackson has good trade value, as does Harrington. There has been talks of kirk Hinrich for harrington already. In this situation, the Warriors made the right choice. (And I hate the Warriors)

Not sure why you make it sound like the Warriors let Baron go. Sure they could have done more for him to stay but he wanted to go to LA to start with.

I could see Smith signing an offer sheet with a different team (76ers for example) but he is a restricted FA so the Hawks can match whatever contract he signs. Though I guess another Joe Johnson situation could occur.
I agree that Baron Davis is not going to make or break the Warriors as championship contenders anytime soon, but I don't see how just letting him go is the right move unless the team was very sure they could recoup some of his value in free agency. There is a good chance all of the saved cap room will just be eaten up by extending the contracts of Andris Biedrins and Monta Ellis. For how much the Grizzlies got ripped for their Pau Gasol trade at least made an attempt to recoup some value by trading for Critteron, little Gasol and a couple draft picks who are decent rebuilding assets. Ive got to think that B Diddy on the trade market has at least that much market value.

I'm reading that the Warriors could make a play for Corey Margette. That might be the most realistic best case scenario for them. Id be all for it especially if it keeps him away from the Spurs or Celtics.

Use your noggin' people. Josh Smith is going to be a Hawk next year. He is an RFA, Atlanta is not going to let him walk for nothing.
Look alive.

Sign and trade for Harrington if Smith doesn't want to play there.
Warriors weren't willing to give that kind of money to begin with, that's why Baron opted out
