Shaq won't make a difference! He isn't a force anymore, and I don't think he's any better than having Gortat, or Robin Lopez. Only difference is that Shaq has a much deserved ego, that is bigger than any player on the Celtics roster.
Not saying that having a guy like that doesn't help, but it doesn't put them in any better position to stop a team like the Bulls, Heat, or Magic IMO.

He's fairly useless at this point in his career. The body is just too broken down...and out of shape.

It makes perfect sense for both parties.
Perkins is going to be out for a while and the Celtics need a big body to fill in for the time he's out. I personally am glad Shaq's ego didn't get the better of him. He probably felt he was at LEAST MLE worthy, but he took the vet minimum. Celtics still look pretty darn tough and ready for next year, if you ask me.

I don't mind guys playing until they figure out they can't anymore. Sports is filled with these guys, and as Dan said Shaq can be at least a decent role player who can fill in. He's a really old vet, and doesn't want to be on a losing team - which makes sense for the team as well, since bad teams SHOULD be trying to figure out who they have that can play well and get better.
It's not the old guys that hang on a bit past their prime that I hate, it's the guys who think their shit doesn't stink that are the problem. Shaq has been forced by age & declining skills to make the change over from the dark side. He seemed to have his rep helped by leaving the Lakers for the Heat.
Now the Heat are the place egos go when they aren't heading to LA.
