When it comes to current TV, nothing is topping the run AMC is having right now. "Breaking Bad" and "Mad Men"? Phenomenal.
In terms of my all-time favorite shows, "The Shield" remains king, thanks mostly to incredible acting (Season 5 with Forest Whitaker was the best season IMO) and realistic plotting.
"Arrested Development" remains right near the top, though. If you haven't watched that twisted comedy show (which only lasted three seasons because Fox is run by idiots and they canceled it - a movie is currently in production), I highly recommend it. It's basically about the most corrupt family ever and how they find ways to lose all their money.
Season 5 of "Dexter" was good but it's impossible to top Season 4 at this point, which is where I think the show hit its peak. The main problem of "Dexter" is that the supporting characters stories are just not that interesting or compelling when compared to when Michael C. Hall is on screen. It's unfortunate it's played out that way. However, the show's ability to cast perfectly in terms of guest stars for the season (Jimmy Smits in Season 3, John Lithgow in Season 4, and surprisingly Julia Stiles knocked the ball out of the park in Season 5), definitely is impressive.

10 eps into the wire Its a marathon but worth it. An hour episodes and you would expect there to be slow periods which just doesn't happen.
If each ep is 55-1hr over every season then I still have well over 45-50hrs of viewing left!

I've been on a "Sons of Anarchy" binge ever since school ended.
Definitely flawed, but still tremendously entertaining. Katey Sagal is giving one of the best performances on TV right now as a tough-as-nails biker mom who must balance her relationships with her second husband (the awesome Ron Perlman) and son (Charlie Hunnam, who looks exactly like Kurt Cobain).
I'm at the 4th episode of season 3 so far, and I still like it very much. The finale of season two was particularly arresting. Definitely over-the-top at parts (although granted, it is a melodrama), but still very watchable due to the writers ability to make such unlikeable people, well....likable I guess.
I'd recommend it.
If you have Netflix, seasons one and two are on Instant right now, which is how I got snagged at first. I'm watching season three online right now.
