The two leading candidates, sources say, are Falcons vice president of player personnel Ronnie Hill and Broncos director of pro scouting Rick Smith.

The Dolphins have held talks with several teams, including the Vikings and Jets, about trading first-round picks in Saturday's NFL Draft. Two NFL sources said the Vikings have put out feelers to the Dolphins with the idea of moving up on draft day to take Vanderbilt QB Jay Cutler should he be available. The apparent reason the talks are happening is because Cutler's once-lofty draft value apparently is slipping.

"We came to the conclusion that to draft a quarterback, whether it be Vince Young, Matt Leinart or Jay Cutler, was not the best thing for this football team," Casserly said. Saints Retain Starting OG Holland
Mike Triplett, New Orleans Times-Picayune
The Saints officially have retained both of their restricted free agents, signing TE Zach Hilton and OG Montrae Holland to one-year tender offers, reportedly at $721,600 each. Both players received some interest in the free-agent market, but neither received any offers. It would have been difficult to pry either player from New Orleans, which has big plans for both fourth-year veterans. Holland, 25, has started 30 games over his young career and arguably was the team's most consistent guard last season.
TE K.Brady Appears Safe For Now

Giants RB T.Barber Already 15% Stronger?
Ernie Palladino, Journal News
At 31, RB Tiki Barber needs to be ever sturdier to guard against the nicks and bruises of a long NFL season. The benefits of the high-weight, low-repetition lifting program that 47-year-old trainer Joe Carini lays out for him now will carry Barber to the end of the schedule. Carini, a former national powerlifting champion, said Barber already is 15 percent stronger at this point than he was all last season. "It's only April," Barber said. "We just got started, and I'm already hitting my maxes from last year."

Jets Working To Get QB Cutler?
Dave Hutchinson, Newark Star-Ledger
The Jets' interest in Vanderbilt QB Jay Cutler remains so high that they're in discussions with the Ravens to try to obtain him with the 13th pick overall. The Ravens want Oregon nose DT Haloti Ngata at 13. If he's available, they will take him and the deal with the Jets is off. Baltimore fears Ngata won't get past the Bills at No. 8. If Ngata is gone at 13, the Ravens would trade the pick to the Jets for the second of the Jets' two first-round picks (29th overall) and their second-round pick (35th overall). The Jets would then select Cutler, if he's available. Of course, if Cutler is not available there would be no deal.

QB Palmer May Not Be Ready For Opener?
Joe Kay, Associated Press, Lexington Herald-Leader
Except for Carson Palmer's left knee, the Bengals are in good shape. Their overriding concern for 2006 can't be fixed in the draft. It's possible he'll be ready for the opener Sept. 10 at Kansas City, but the odds are that he'll miss at least part of the season.

Terry McCormick, Nashville City Paper
The NFL Players Association asked Monday that the grievance between QB Steve McNair and the Titans be expedited. NFLPA general counsel Richard Berthelsen confirmed Monday to The City Paper the request to expedite has been made, and the case will be heard by one of two arbitrators, likely in about three weeks. With the situation so fluid, there is no chance the hearing can be scheduled before this weekend’s NFL Draft. “I would expect the process would likely take about 20 to 25 days to be heard,” Berthelsen said.

Teams at the top of the list include Denver and Philadelphia. But there are at least three confirmed others that weighed in today. Rich Cimini, New York Daily News

QB Favre Tried To Sway LB Arrington's Decision
Tom Silverstein, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
LB LaVar Arrington told the Washington Times last weekend that QB Brett Favre intervened on the Packers' behalf late in the process to strongly encourage the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker to sign with the Packers. Arrington told the newspaper that Favre nearly swayed him to accept the offer from Green Bay. Arrington expressed to the Times that the fact the Packers were 4-12 last season and that Favre might play only one more year were factors that weighed on his mind. If Favre was playing recruiter for the Packers it would seem to indicate a strong desire to return?
RB Benson Thinking Big
K.C. Johnson, Chicago Tribune
While RB Thomas Jones works out elsewhere and his agent explores trade possibilities, RB Cedric Benson keeps his mind focused on what he controls. Doctors discovered a cartilage tear during the surgery. Stevens may return in time for training camp, although a precise timetable is not known.
RB M.Williams May Not Retire?
Sean Jensen, St. Paul Pioneer Press
The agent for former Vikings RB Moe Williams said it is presumptuous to assume his client will retire. "It's not clear that he's retiring," agent Ethan Lock said Tuesday. "That's not accurate at all."
TE K.Brady Appears Safe For Now
Vito Stellino, Florida Times-Union
Whether the Jaguars draft a tight end in the first round or not Saturday, they will have a roster spot for TE Kyle Brady next season. So said Jaguars HC Jack Del Rio at the team's pre-draft news conference Tuesday. "There aren't a lot of tight ends who can block defensive ends the way Brady can," Del Rio said. "He can't play forever, but he's going to play this year."

Dolphins Taking Last Look At Prospects
Barry Jackson, Miami Herald
Top Dolphins officials will be in Tallahassee today to take a final look at LB Ernie Sims, DE/LB Kamerion Wimbley, DT Brodrick Bunkley and CB Antonio Cromartie. The Dolphins like Bunkley and see Wimbley as someone who could fill their need for another pass-rushing linebacker when they play a 3-4 scheme.

Palmer's left knee had to be rebuilt after he tore it up during a first-round playoff loss to Pittsburgh. It's possible he'll be ready for the opener Sept. 10 at Kansas City, but the odds are that he'll miss at least part of the season.

Jamison Hensley, Baltimore Sun
Dismissing trade rumors about LB Ray Lewis, a Ravens official said no team has called to express interest in the former All-Pro middle linebacker. Lewis created a stir last week when he failed to endorse the return of HC Brian Billick and criticized the team's defensive scheme and personnel.
QB McNair's Grievance To Be Heard Mid-May
Terry McCormick, Nashville City Paper
The NFL Players Association asked Monday that the grievance between QB Steve McNair and the Titans be expedited. NFLPA general counsel Richard Berthelsen confirmed Monday to The City Paper the request to expedite has been made, and the case will be heard by one of two arbitrators, likely in about three weeks. With the situation so fluid, there is no chance the hearing can be scheduled before this weekend’s NFL Draft. “I would expect the process would likely take about 20 to 25 days to be heard,” Berthelsen said.
More Teams Express Interest In WR J.Walker?
Adam Schefter, NFL.com
Yesterday, the Packers began fielding telephone calls, and offers, in terms of trying to decide whether it is worth it to trade WR Javon Walker. Teams at the top of the list include Denver and Philadelphia. But there are at least three confirmed others that weighed in today. There is no shortage of suitors for Walker, meaning that it is looking more and more as if Green Bay will ship out the disgruntled receiver who has stated he will not play again for the Packers.
Jets, Raiders Talking Trade?
Rich Cimini, New York Daily News
One rumor yesterday: The Jets (No. 4) swap first-round picks with the Raiders (No. 7), who want a quarterback, and select Oregon DT Haloti NGata with the seventh pick. The Jets don't have a pure nose tackle for their new 3-4 scheme.

The last big-name free agent out there is CB Charles Woodson, who remains high on the Packers' wish list. Talks with Woodson and his agent, Carl Poston, continued Monday. The Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the front-runners for Woodson's services and it's possible the veteran cornerback will make a decision on his new home before the draft.
One year and one day since the Bears used the fourth overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft on him, Benson is participating in the team's off-season program leading up to a June mini-camp, eager to put a disappointing first season behind him.
