BEAR WATCHING Keeping tabs on quarterbacks Rex Grossman (left) and Brian Griese as they jockey for position during camp.
John Mullin Published July 31, 2006
For the first time as a pro, Rex Grossman doesn't have to learn a new offense in training camp. In each of his first three seasons with the Bears, Grossman worked under a different offensive coordinator, but now he's at ease in his second year with Ron Turner. "It's just so much easier, the comfort level with him and with the offense, calling plays and all the checks," Grossman said. "It makes all the difference."
Grossman continues to run the offense with obvious confidence. When he misses, it is usually high as he is clearly unafraid to turn the ball loose. Brian Griese looks very polished with his ball fakes, misdirecting most of the defense Sunday with a play-action fake to the right before he rolled left. Both he and Grossman were victimized by drops in drills; Bernard Berrian muffed a slant from Grossman and Airese Currie failed to handle consecutive throws from Griese, the second of which was stripped.
