STORRS, Conn. -- Connecticut center Josh Boone said Monday he plans to hire an agent soon and stay in the NBA Draft, passing up his senior year with the Huskies.
The announcement came on the same day that point guard A.J. Price received medical clearance to play, nearly two years after suffering a brain hemorrhage.
The 6-foot-10 Boone made put his name in the draft pool April 7, but didn't immediately hire an agent.
Since his announcement in April, Boone has been working on his game in an attempt to improve his position in the June 28 draft. He says he's gotten very positive feedback, leading to his decision to turn pro.
"The past two months have accomplished exactly what I hoped they would. They have shown me where I am as a player, and what I need to do to prepare for life in the NBA," Boone said. "I am confident that I am making the right decision, and improving my draft position with each workout and each day."
He appeared in 103 games, averaging nine points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots during his three seasons at UConn. Boone, the 2004-05 Big East Defensive Player of the Year, was a member of the 2004 national championship team.
Boone thanked the UConn program and coach Jim Calhoun, who wished him well.
"Josh has worked very hard and contributed in a big way to our success over the past three years," Calhoun said.
Boone is the third UConn player to enter the draft, joining teammates Rudy Gay and Marcus Williams. Gay passed on his final two years of eligibility and Williams is not returning for his senior season.
Price fell ill in October 2004, his freshman year, and spent several days in the hospital. He was diagnosed with a vascular abnormality and has been under going treatment since then.
Off-court problems also kept Price off the team last year. He and Williams were arrested last year for allegedly trying to sell stolen laptops. Price was kicked off the team for a year and Williams for a semester. Both were granted a special form of probation that will result in their criminal records being erased if they successfully complete the program.
