HOU - Texans Sign RB A. Smith, Re-Signs OL Wiegert
Source: ESPN.com (AP)
The Houston Texans agreed to terms with RB Antowain Smith on Monday, giving the team a capable backup behind starter RB Domanick Davis. Also on Monday, Houston re-signed guard/tackle Zach Wiegert. Wiegert started five games at RG and seven games at RT last season.
CIN - QB Palmer Notes, Working On Footwork
Source: Geoff Hobson, Bengals.com
High is where hopes are surrounding Palmer even though he won't be on the field. By all accounts, Palmer's rehab since he returned to Cincinnati seven weeks ago has been smoother than his release. No one is backing off the Opening Day goal. It's far from a pipe cinch. But it's not a pipe dream, either. But the right arm needs that front left knee first. Although his rehab has been guarded like a presidential bike ride, he has alluded to drills for footwork and weight work for his lower body. Clearly, the legs are a big part in the mechanics of the passing game, although he has been saying he can only do drops at half speed. "If you don?t finish the throw," Palmer says, "your accuracy changes. Your power changes. You definitely need a lot of balance and strength."
JAX - QB Leftwich Not Changing
Source: Vic Ketchman, jaguars.com Senior Editor
Leftwich met with reporters in a media interview session to kickoff the start of this weekend's mini-camp. The first question concerned what Leftwich has to do to become better and the second question cut to the chase: What about your throwing motion? "My throwing motion is going to be my motion," Leftwich said forcefully. "That's the way it is. My throwing motion won't change."
DEN - RB Cobbs Gets A Fresh Start
Source: Andrew Mason, DenverBroncos.com
RB Cedric Cobbs is starting his third season in the NFL. He is now with the team that wanted him on draft day in 2004. The Broncos opted to take Tatum Bell instead. Now they have both. After two quiet seasons in New England, Cobbs now has a shot for some playing time. "My thoughts are not to push for playing time right now," Cobbs said. "I just want to allow the coaches to believe in me and have someone to be able to count on at any given moment." Until then, he'll work, watch and learn.
SF - OG Allen Impresses With Size And Strength
Source: Kevin Lynch, The San Francisco Chronicle
OG Larry Allen showed off his massive size and strength in the minicamp. He was tossing linebackers around like rag dolls. In another drill, he hit a pad held by 305 OL Eric Heitman. Heitman left his feet and stumbled backwards. HC Mike Nolan told some selected players, including Allen to be careful for fear of injury. Allen appears too heavy but the 49ers aren't concerned. Allen has a history of being at playing weight come season.
DEN - QB Plummer Will Respond Says Elway
Source: AP, ESPN.com
John Elway can relate to the feelings that QB Jake Plummer is feeling right now. In Elway's 9th season, the Broncos selected QB Tommy Maddox in the first round of the NFL draft. Elway liked the selection of QB Jay Cutler. "They're in the perfect situation, they've proven they can win with Jake and they've started looking to the future. When Cutler gets to the point where he can compete for the job, I'm sure Jake, knowing the way Jake handles things, he'll take it as a challenge and perform."
Plummer seems at ease with the pick. "I talked with Mike and I think I would have made the same pick," Plummer said. "You go get a guy like him. Especially with this organization, when are we going to get a chance to pick that high again? Hopefully not in a long, long time."
CLE - QB Frye Ready To Go Solo
Source: Mary Kay Cabot, Plain Dealer
"Nothing surprises me anymore in this business," Frye said. "Trent has done so much for me, and I'll never be able to thank him enough for what he did for me last year as far as mentoring me and having me in there watching film and things like that. But he has to look out for himself, and if he thought he was better off going to San Francisco, I wish him the best of luck." What's more, Frye has developed a close relationship with former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar, who has served as a mentor since last season. With Dilfer gone, Kosar probably will play an even bigger role in Frye's development.
DET - Players Back Coaching Staff
Source: Nicholas J. Cotsonika, George Sipple, Detroit Free Press
Lions CB Dre Bly thinks no one should have complained about HC Rod Marinelli's off-season program. Multiple players told the Free Press on Monday they didn't know about the grievance until after it was filed, supported the coaching staff and stressed they were willing to work hard to win. Bly pointed out the Rams lost a week of workouts for similar reasons when he was in St. Louis. "This happens," Bly said. "It's no big deal."
SEA - Healthy WR Warrick Looks For Opportunity
Source: Associated Press, ESPN
WR Peter Warrick thought his lifeless career was about to be jump-started again. WR Joe Jurevicius left Seattle in March to sign with his hometown Browns. Warrick looked at the remaining receivers: WR Darrell Jackson, who had recently undergone his second knee surgery in four months, veteran WR Bobby Engram, and still-developing WR D.J. Hackett. Suddenly, Warrick could see himself becoming more relevant than he's been in four years. Three weeks later, the Seahawks signed Minnesota restricted free agent WR Nate Burleson. Warrick just hopes to have an opportunity on a Super Bowl team.
But coach Holmgren sounds pretty non committal: "I'm just saying he's looking better to me now. It's early. We have a pretty good group of wide receivers. We'll see how it sorts itself out."
ARZ - Cardinals O-Line Must Get It Done
Source: Kent Somers, The Arizona Republic
New Arizona Cardinal RB Edgerrin James doesn't want to have any negative rushes this year. He wants his offensive line to lead the way. But this O-Line was last in the league last year in rushing and yards per attempt. James has faith in them though. He did his research before he decided on the Cardinals. "I watched everything," he said, "all 16 games. They (the offensive linemen) have a lot of upside. "Yeah, there were a lot of mental errors, but when you have injuries, not everybody is on the same page. You can't get in sync."
CLE - RB Droughns Found Not Guilty
Source: WKYC-TV
There were fewer charges than expected for Browns running back Reuben Droughns who went on trial today in connection with a traffic stop arrest. Droughns, who was found not guilty today, was pulled over after a Halloween party last year. He was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and speeding. But before the trial even started, the judge threw out evidence from the field sobriety tests including the trooper's dash cam tape.
Ricky Williams May Face Drug Tests In CFL
Source: ESPN.com news services
Ricky Williams may have to take a drug test if the running back wants to play for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. Williams will continue to participate in the NFL's substance-abuse program, meaning he is subject to up to 10 random tests a month and must remain under the supervision of a medical adviser.
DEF - TEN - CB Jones: 'Everyone Wants Me To Snap'
Source: Jim Wyatt, Tennessean.com
Through the eyes of Pacman Jones, everyone is staring at him. Whether it's the police, media or even those in the Titans organization, the controversial cornerback feels like his every move is being watched and scrutinized. And for that reason, Jones packed up and left the city a few weeks ago, deciding to work out on his own in Phoenix. On Monday night, he returned to Nashville. "I can't even breathe in Tennessee,'' Jones said. "Everybody acts like I killed somebody or something. Everything that's happened, it's either been a rumor or I wasn't involved. But I've been a target ever since I've been there. I'm used to it. I just hope it gets better.''
"I have no father figure. I have no one. It is just me, man,'' said Jones, whose father was killed when he was just a child. "All those other guys, when they get in stuff, they have people they can go to and all that. "In my situation, I have been the father figure of my whole family since I have been 17 years old. I never had a dad I could go to, to sit down with and talk to and explain what I am going though and all that. "I am not making no excuses because I have made it this far; I'll be all right. I really don't give a (expletive) about what a lot of people say and that is really what my attitude is right now. I am just trying to be a role model for the people that love me. I can't worry about what the media and other people are saying because if I do that I definitely won't be mentally strong. ... But it seems like everyone wants me to snap.''
5/8 Updates
TEN - Young May Move Faster Than Expected
Source: Charles Robinson, Yahoo! Sports
The Titans have vowed to take the slow approach, and coach Jeff Fisher even reiterated the design at the start of last weekend's minicamp for rookies, saying Young's playing days will arrive "when he's ready." But actions suggest that day might be sooner than many league personnel men anticipated. With Steve McNair likely to continue his career in another city and Billy Volek looking to be elevated to the starting position, the Titans will spend the next four months giving Young a crash course on offense. Not just to teach, but to make him a viable option on offense in 2006. "The difference between what Vince will be able to do and what Steve did [as a rookie] is significant, because of the time," Fisher said. "You know, you didn't have the specific OTA (organized team activity) days and things like that. He'll participate in probably 10 or 11 of them here, so that's going to help him.
SF - TE Davis Shows Abilities In Mini-Camp
Source: Craig Massei, San Francisco Illustrated
49ers top draftee Vernon Davis showed that he's no ordinary tight end. Not only did the rookie get behind safety Keith Lewis on a post pattern, but also he vaulted into the air and took the ball away from the veteran once it arrived. Davis also split out wide at mini-camp and froze Chad Williams on a slant route.
MIA - DET - Miami, Detroit Talking Trade For Harrington
Source: Jason Cole, Miami Herald
The Dolphins and the Lions have been in discussions during the weekend that could result in QB Joey Harrington being traded to the team in time to begin organized training activities in Miami by May 15, according to two sources. The Dolphins had originally offered a seventh-round pick this year, then offered the pick in 2007. It's unknown what the deal might be at this point.
SF - QB Smith Feeling Confident During Minicamp
Source: Dennis Georgatos, Knight Ridder via The Contra Costa Times
Practicing with confidence and efficiency, last year's first overall draft pick QB Alex Smith ran the 49ers offense smoothly during the team's minicamp and demonstrated good command of the new scheme installed by first-year offensive coordinator Norv Turner. The true test of Smith's effectiveness, of course, won't come until the 49ers begin playing games. But Nolan said it was worth noting that during the camp, the ball hit the ground only once, on a bad exchange between the quarterback and center. "Last year, we had at least two a drill," Nolan said.
"It's very clear to me he's a different player, from the standpoint he's comfortable," coach Mike Nolan said Sunday as the 49ers wrapped up the three-day gathering. "He doesn't have to worry about, 'Where do I go next? What do I do now?' He can focus on the one job of playing quarterback and you can see that in his play. He's very focused and he's just going to keep getting better through the process."
DEN - WR Walker Close To New Deal
Source: Michael Smith, ESPN.com
According to a source familiar with the negotiations Broncos WR Javon Walker is set to sign an extension, possibly as early as today. Walker had threatened to hold out last year in Green Bay, and was traded on draft day to the Broncos. The deal is said to be worth about $40 million that includes $15 million in option bonuses, $10 million due in 2007 and the other $5 million due in '08. Walker will play out the final year of his rookie contract this year plus receive a $1 million roster bonus from the Broncos.
CAR - WR Smith Welcomes WR Johnson
Source: Charles Chandler, Charlotte Observer
WR Steve Smith isn't naive enough to think his strong personality will never clash with WR Keyshawn Johnson's strong personality. "A lot of people are going to be watching how we interact. It's not really about how we interact. It's how many games we're going to win, because that's what really counts." That's where Smith sees Johnson fitting in best for a Panthers team that lacked a consistent No. 2 receiver last year. Smith makes it clear, that he and Johnson will complement one another, just like he and WR Muhsin Muhammad did. "We will feed off of each other," Smith said.
"We were joking, laughing and messing around (about it) in the huddle," Smith said. "It's going to be good chemistry. I think it's going to be fun."
ATL - RB Duckett Staying Put
Source: CBS SportsLine.com
The Falcons have decided to hold onto T.J. Duckett, after fielding several offers from teams such as the Steelers. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that if third-round pick Jerious Norwood gives indications that he can complement Warrick Dunn, Atlanta's asking price for Duckett could come down.
MIA - Dolphins To Decide On RB Williams' CFL Status
Source: South Florida Sun-Sentinel
Running Back Ricky Williams agent Leigh Steinberg expects to know today whether the Dolphins will grant permission for the suspended running back to play in the Canadian Football league this season. Williams is being courted to play by the Toronto Argonauts, but he needs permission from the Dolphins to play in the CFL. Dolphins coach Nick Saban is seemingly lukewarm to the idea.
CHI - Rookie WR Hester Impresses As Punt Returner
Source: Brad Biggs, Chicago Sun-Times
If you had to pick a star of the Bears' rookie minicamp, it would be second-round pick WR Devin Hester. His athletic ability, especially returning punts, stood out over the weekend, and he appears to have the kind of game-breaking traits that are hard to find on this roster. Hester has the speed and quickness that makes it look like the punt-return position, if not both return jobs, have been filled.
DEN - WR Lelie's Situation Similar To WR Walker's
Source: Michael Smith, ESPN.com
Javon Walker and Ashley Lelie figuratively were in the same place until the draft's first day, when the Green Bay Packers finally dealt their former first-round pick (2002) for the first (No. 37 overall) of Denver's two second-round picks. Lelie reportedly wishes to be a team's No. 1 receiver and believes a trade is the best means to accommodate that wish. Like Walker last spring in Green Bay, Lelie is threatening to boycott practice until his demand is met, only Lelie's gripe is with catches and not cash, as was Walker's.
The two WRs are training at the same facility in Arizona which makes it even more ironic. Sounds like Walker is lobbying for Lelie to head to Green Bay: "At the time when I wanted out of Green Bay I was encouraging [Lelie, that] if he went to Green Bay, he would love it up there because it might be a better fit for him," Walker says. "He would love Green Bay. He would have loved the fans."
GB - Rookie WR Jennings Impresses
Source: Pete Dougherty, PackersNews.com
After trading disgruntled receiver Javon Walker on the first day of the draft, the Packers need a bona fide threat opposite Donald Driver. Second round pick Greg Jennings out of Western Michigan stood out over the weekend. On several catches he appeared quicker making cuts and attacking the ball than all of the receivers other than Driver.
SF - WR Bryant Has Good Showing In Mini-Camp
Source: Craig Massei, San Francisco Illustrated
Antonio Bryant, the 49ers' new starting split end, wasn't letting any footballs thrown his way touch the ground. At first glance, Bryant looks like a considerable upgrade over the man he's replacing in the lineup, Brandon Lloyd. It appears clear that Vernon Davis and Bryant are the team's top two receiving targets, not necessarily in that order. Bryant is just 25 years old and already with his third NFL team.
OAK - OT Gallery Moving To Left Tackle
Source: Steve Corkran, Contra Costa Times
The Raiders didn't use the second pick of the 2004 NFL draft on OT Robert Gallery so that he could play right offensive tackle his entire career. A player drafted that high is viewed as a long-term fixture at left offensive tackle, the spot considered by many the most important of the five offensive line positions. For Gallery, the switch represents a return to the position he played during a stellar career at Iowa. "I'm comfortable already," Gallery said. "I'll get the little (stuff) down and move on."
GB - QB Rodgers Shows Skills
Source: Bob McGinn, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Two of QB Aaron Rodgers' new coaches were impressed by how he performed in the Packers' three-day, four-practice minicamp that concluded Sunday morning. "I was really pleased with Aaron," OC Jeff Jagodzinski said. "Absolutely. His arm strength. The way he got that thing out. And his deep ball was good. "He's got it. He just needs a chance to do it." QB Brett Favre took minimal repetitions over the weekend, giving Rodgers primary exposure with the No. 1 offense.
DAL - Cowboys HC Parcells Denies Trying To Trade RB Jones
Source: Mac Engel, Star-Telegram
Dallas Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells recently denied that the team was attempting to trade running back Julius Jones prior to the NFL Draft. "No, we were not trying to trade him," Parcells said. "Now durability is a big deal at the running back position. So he's had a little tough luck. But I think things will get better for him."
NO - RB Bennett: The Odd Man Out?
Source: Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune
RB Michael Bennett is trying to stay positive after the Saints selected RB Reggie Bush in the NFL Draft. But he can't help but notice the obvious; the kind of attributes that made Bush famous in college are the same traits Bennett brings to the field. Now RB Deuce McAllister and Bush figure to provide that 1-2 punch, and Bennett figures to be used sparingly as a No. 3 running back.
"But my thing is just, I don't want to be a rotten apple. And I'm all about the team. I want to win a Super Bowl, and I'm going to do whatever it takes."
GB - QB Favre Excused From Next Minicamp
Source: Len Pasquarelli, ESPN.com
Packers HC Mike McCarthy confirmed at the end of the weekend mini-camp that QB Brett Favre has been excused from the next session May 19-21, which is optional. After the second mini-camp, the Packers have 14 days of organized team activities that begin May 31 and conclude June 21, and McCarthy said Favre could be on hand for 10 of those days.
TEN - Fisher and Reese Wanted Leinart But Owner Wanted Young
Source: John Czarnecki, Fox Sports
Matt Leinart, however, was the choice of Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher and GM Floyd Reese. But Titans owner Bud Adams told his coach and personnel man to draft Texas quarterback Vince Young even though Leinart was rated higher on the final Tennessee draft board. Adams, who moved his team from Houston to Nashville in 1997, wanted Young, his hometown kid.
