Eye-opening camp award goes to Davis Now front-runner to start at slot receiver
BY K.C. JOHNSON AND JOHN MULLIN Published August 17, 2006
BOURBONNAIS -- Each Bears training camp seems to unearth at least one surprise or one player who helps himself more than expected.
By all accounts, one such player this year is Rashied Davis.
The receiver-turned-cornerback-turned-receiver has followed up his strong performance Friday in San Francisco with a solid week of practice. His bid to be the slot receiver is looking more and more certain and, with Mark Bradley and Muhsin Muhammad resting Wednesday, he lined up outside as well.
"He did really well early, then hit a period for three or four days where he fell back a little bit," offensive coordinator Ron Turner said.
"But he rebounded. He has helped himself out a lot. If he keeps going like that, we'll find ways to use him."
There were questions whether the 5-foot-9-inch, 183-pounder could provide enough toughness to handle being the slot receiver. Turner said his quickness and ability to get separation off the line has answered them.
"He has shown a really good knack of escaping," Turner said. "That's the key. You have to give the quarterback somewhere to throw. He has very good cutting ability coming out of his breaks."
Davis caught four passes for 91 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown pass from Brian Griese, against San Francisco.
