DETROIT -- Yankees outfielder Gary Sheffield traveled to New York early Wednesday for further evaluation of his sore left wrist.
Manager Joe Torre said Sheffield left Detroit after trainer Gene Monahan was able to schedule an appointment with hand specialist Dr. Charles Malone, the same doctor who examined the slugger earlier this season.
Sheffield was scratched from Tuesday's lineup with soreness in the wrist. He missed 16 games in early May after colliding with Toronto first baseman Shea Hillenbrand on April 29.
The Yankees placed Sheffield on the 15-day disabled list May 6 and activated him May 23.
"We don't know much of anything right now," Torre said. "We're hoping we get some information before the end of the game tonight."
Sheffield, who went 1-for-4 on Monday against the Tigers, is hitting .309 with four home runs and 19 RBI.
The Yankees will likely be without backup outfielder Bubba Crosby until at least the middle part of next week. He has been on the disabled list with a hamstring injury since May 19.
"It's getting close," Crosby said in Tampa, Fla.
Crosby hopes to play in an extended spring training game this weekend. He took batting practice and fly balls Wednesday, and is expected to start running the bases within the next couple of days.
Relief pitcher Octavio Dotel, who had ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow last June, is scheduled to pitch on consecutive days for the first time in extended spring games Friday and Saturday.
Dotel is slated to work two straight days three times in the minors before possibly joining the Yankees around June 15.
"I've got to see how I feel," Dotel said. "It depends on how I feel. When I go to New York, I want to be ready."
Dotel is expected to join Class-A Tampa next week.
Right-hander Jesus Colome, out with a shoulder injury, will throw batting practice for the second time Friday and is scheduled to make his first extended spring training appearance Monday.
