“I saw John Kruk on ‘Baseball Tonight,’ and he said, ‘[the Padres are] playing real well, but I don’t believe in them,’ ” Bell said before Monday’s game. “And I saw ESPN’s promo for tonight’s game. They mention the Mets are opening Citi Field, they mentioned the starting time, but nowhere did they mention the Padres. That gave me the (expletive).”
Bell was just getting warmed up in his pregame commentary.
“I truly believe ESPN only cares about promoting the Red Sox and Yankees and Mets – and nobody else,” said the closer, a former Met. “That’s why I like the MLB Network, because they promote everybody. I’m really turned off by ESPN and ‘Baseball Tonight.’ When Jake Peavy threw 8 1/3 innings on Saturday, they showed one pitch in the third inning and that was it. It’s all about the Red Sox, Yankees and Mets.”

This is common knowledge to everyone already. ESPN has been like this for years. But their revenue comes from ratings so they follow only the most popular teams. MLB, NBA, and NFL network are owned by the leagues so they can afford to cover everyone since they can fall back on the revenue the league generates.

Those leagues also get the most money from the big market teams - but they don't only cover Yanks/Sox or Cowboys/Giants. You say that as if ESPN is running low on money somehow. I bet they bring in just as much profit as the MLB does.

I bet they bring in just as much profit as the MLB does. I doubt they bring in as much profit as MLB does but they do bring in profit from covering the top markets. I never said their running low on money, but they would if they devoted most of their team to a team like the Kansas City Royals. Also every owner has an equal stake in the league so of course the league owned networks are going to provide even coverage of teams. And I'm not supporting ESPN's business model but it does make sense to me. Any business's goal is to make money, ESPN found something that works and they're sticking to it.

ESPN doesn't really have any competition right now so the consumer doesn't really have a choice. But if the MLB, NFL and NBA channels continue to grow they are going to be hurting. The NBA on TNT is so much better than the broadcasts by ABC and ESPN. I dont know the ratings but I would be shocked if TNT was not getting the bigger market share relative to ESPN.

Problem is a lot of those channels are exclusive to direct TV or digital cable. You can't get them with basic cable. And ESPN keeps it that way by letting the leagues dictate the type of programing they show on ESPN. I remember they cancelled the show "Playmakers" because the NFL thought it was detrimental to their image.
