im not sure if im happy about this or mad about this, but im leaning on the side of being happy... it takes away the suns best defender, and they have guards like Durant, Kobe, Roy in there division, so not much else to guard them. Also SHaq doesn't fit into the system. Lakers win this deal i say. Marion wouldn't be guarding any of those guys. That'd fall to Raja Bell -Dre

I understand why the Suns do it from a business stand point. They were going to be in luxuray tax hell, and couldn't get anyone to take on Marion and banks contracts. They screwed themselves by trying to pay everyone on that roster 8 million plus per season. that's why they gave away kurt thomas during the draft, even though he was a big exp. they couldn't even afford to hold on to that exp contract. Now they get a 24 million dollar contract that will exp in two seasons oppose to Marion and Banks who still 4 years left. if they would had kept them, they would be in the same situation as the Knicks in 2003. Shaq doesn't fit the team at all, but out of all the players they could grab with a exp contract in 2 seasons, he was the best. And I'm mot convinced that Shaq hasn't already told th Heat and Suns that he will retire at the end of the season anyways. Marior could opt out this season... if he opted out, then that gave the SUns a huge boost, Shaq has 2 seasons, AFTER this deal. how doest this help? you give up a potential expiring(if not this year but next year) to get an old Center that doesn't fit the system... The keyword is could. The only time a player who makes Max opts out, is if he can get the same money somewhere else. Not to many teams in the NBA are willing to pay that kind of money to a gimmick player anymore. Perfect example is Kenyon Martin. He was the shit with the best point guard in the league, and the Nuggets went and offerd him a max deal. They foundout the hard way that Martin isn't that go to guy, and he needs to be around a great passer who likes to run. Now the Nuggets are regretting signing him for so much. As much as I love marion, I think he might fall under that same category. And as I said, If Shaq is telling the Suns and Heat that this is his last season then why not take the guranteed deal? AK would be a nice piece to add, but it doesn't help the Suns tax issue. So if Shaq is indeed retiring, I think this deal makes sense. BTW, regardless to how much Marion might not want to be a Sun, he isn't a fool. He won't leave 40 million dollars on the table, to take less money somewhere else. Thats why he loves the trade to Miami, becasue he won't have to opt out of his deal and see what his real value is.

He's not going to leave 40 million on the table anymore than Marion would. EDIT It looks like Marion only has a 1 yr 17 miilion dollar player option left on his contract. I could see him opting out for a more long term contract even if it means making less than 17 million a year. www.hoopshype.com/salaries/phoenix.htm

If Shaq retires all it does is waste $20 million on someone doing commentary on TNT with Charles Barkely. I don't see where that makes sense at all.
I must say as a life-long Suns fan that I'm not sad to see Marion go, he has been peddled so much as underrated that he's now overrated. Sure he guards all 5 positions, but he doesn't stop them. Sure he runs the floor well, but where is he in the half court offense? Don't get me wrong he's a good player but I sure as hell wanted to see him go, mostly because of the fact that they could've gotten a very good piece back...and then we get Shaq? I find it hard to believe that this was the best deal the Suns could've gotten for Marion. He's just too old. He can't keep up with the running, and even if we slow down for him, he's so brittle now he can't stay on the court anyway. Of all the big men...we had to get the one who's not physically capable of playing anymore?

His damn coach went on the air and begged the league to allow him to be an Allstar. Shaq has always said that he wouldn't stick around and just be an old man on the court. He's always said that since his Lakers days, and I would not be surprised in the least bit if he retires. Espicially if surgery is required on his hip at the end of the season

Espicially if surgery is required on his hip at the end of the season Posted on Thu, Jan. 24, 2008 Shaq says he won't retire early BY BARRY JACKSON Amid media speculation about his future, Heat center Shaquille O'Neal again indicated Thursday he will not retire before his contract expires at the end of the 2009-2010 season. In an interview Thursday, ESPN Radio's Jack Ramsay told O'Neal, ``I don't hear retirement in your voice.'' Responded O'Neal: ``No, never that. I am the son of an army drill sergeant, and when we enlist, we go full term. So I've got two years left on my term, and after that, I'll be looking to do other things.'' When he was dealing with his current hip injury earlier this month, O'Neal told The Miami Herald there was no scenario in which he would walk away from the last two years of his five-year contract, which pays $20 million annually. He has expressed amazement to associates that the retirement issue has even been raised. Several NBA columnists have suggested in recent weeks that O'Neal might or should retire, partly because it would clear his salary off the Heat's cap. Meanwhile, O'Neal told Ramsay he would try to return this season from a hip and quadriceps injury that is expected to sideline him at least two weeks. O'Neal blamed the condition on an ''accumulation'' of injuries. He said a thigh injury in 2005 made his leg weak, which led to a knee injury. ''Now I've got a weak thigh and a weak knee, which causes the muscle around the hip to be funny,'' he said. ``Right now, I've got to focus on getting the leg back stronger.'' Asked if he thinks he could do that this season, O'Neal told Ramsay, ``We're going to be trying to do it this season.'' O'Neal said when he reported to training camp, coach Pat Riley ``wanted me to be the lightest I've ever been and in great shape and I've done that right now.'' The 14-time All-Star center told Ramsay that his weight is between 315 and 320 pounds, with 11 percent body fat. ''I've never been that here,'' he said. ``I've always been between 13 and 14 percent body fat. I'm in the best shape of my life. I worked my butt off, and now this.'' O'Neal, who turns 36 on March 6, is averaging 14.2 points and 7.8 rebounds in 32 games. Thursday's game against San Antonio marked the ninth game he has missed this season. ''Whenever my numbers have [declined], it hasn't been because of humans,'' O'Neal told Ramsay. ``It has been [because of] freak injuries.'' O'Neal aggravated his hip injury in Monday's loss to Cleveland, and an MRI exam revealed acute inflammation in his left hip and quadriceps.
